Rolex Submariner Date – A Legacy Beneath the Surface

The legacy of the Rolex Submariner

When the Rolex Submariner was unveiled in 1953, it marked a turning point in both watchmaking and exploration. It was the first wristwatch capable of withstanding depths of up to 100 metres, created for divers whose survival depended on precision. The Submariner’s Oyster case, screw-down crown and robust configuration set a new standard, proving that style and durability could coexist without compromise.

From then, the Submariner was more than just a tool, it became an iconic timepiece, appealing far beyond the world of professional diving. Its clean dial, luminous markers, and rotating bezel create a harmonious blend between functionality and design. Since its creation, the Submariner has remained faithful to the classic design code, whilst still evolving in the face of innovation.

A watch beyond the depths

From underwater expeditions to cinematic appearances, the Submariner has transcended its initial technical purpose to become a universal symbol of adventure.

Refining a classic: The Submariner Date

Among the many milestones of the brand, the introduction of the Submariner Date stands as one of the most defining. By adding the date complication beneath Rolex’s signature Cyclops lens, Rolex elevated the Submariner from purely a diver’s watch into a sophisticated timepiece for everyday life.

The Submariner Date retains the functionality of its predecessors. It offers a variety of technical features including water resistance up to 300 metres, a Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert, luminescent Chromalight display and the cyclops lens that offers an additional layer of practicality.

For many, the Submariner Date represents the perfect amalgamation of functionality and timeless style, this timepiece is crafted in Oystersteel, Rolesor, or 18ct gold.

Seventy years after its creation, the Submariner remains one of the most recognisable and desired watches. It is a reminder of Rolex’s pioneering spirit and enduring commitment to excellence.

The classic watch of reference. This Rolex timepiece is one of the brand’s most recognised models. It was introduced into the collection in 1988 and remained in production until 2010.

As the last steel Submariner to feature an aluminium bezel insert and slimmer, more traditional case proportions, the 16610LN holds a special place in Rolex history. Its successor, the 116610 LN, was introduced with thicker lugs and a ceramic bezel, making the 16610 LN a nostalgic favourite among watch enthusiasts who appreciated its balance between vintage accents and reliability.

To celebrate 50 years of the launch of the Submariner, Rolex wanted to have a watch ready for the annual watch fair in Basel, rebranded Baselworld that year.

The result was the famous Ref. 16610 LV, identifiable at a distance by its green bezel insert and on closer inspection by its slightly larger hands and indices.

This model was an instant success and became one of the most discussed and sought after watches of the era. Due to its popularity, it later entered Rolex’s main collection.

Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 16618 (gold)

This 18ct Yellow Gold timepiece was introduced in 1988 and replaced Ref. 16808. The production of this model was halted in 2010 which makes it one of the longest-running submariner references in production, approximately 22 years.

Reference 16618 bridges the gap between the more traditional and modern models with slimmer lugs and an elegant case profile.
